Sandals Royal Caribbean, Mahoe Bay, Montego Bay Couples only#1

Sandals Royal Caribbean

Mahoe Bay10 min from MBJ

Best for: Couples who want the single most memorable stay

  • Private offshore island reached by complimentary boat
  • Jamaica's only overwater bungalows
  • Nine restaurants, no reservations needed

If one Montego Bay property is worth stretching the budget for, it is this one. A free shuttle boat runs to Sandals Cay, a private island with its own beach club and Thai restaurant, and the overwater villas are the only ones of their kind in Jamaica. Couples only, so it stays calm.

Before you book

Couples only means two adults sharing a room — no friend groups, no solo travellers, no children. The beach is smaller than at the Riu or Secrets properties.

$$$$ PremiumSee rates
Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay, Freeport Peninsula, Montego Bay Adults only#2

Secrets Wild Orchid

Freeport Peninsula15 min from MBJ

Best for: The best quality-to-price ratio on this list

  • Full run of two resorts — Wild Orchid and St. James
  • Unlimited à-la-carte dining, no reservations
  • Wide beach on the Freeport peninsula

Guests here can use Secrets St. James next door as well, which effectively doubles the restaurants, pools and bars for one nightly rate. Wild Orchid is the livelier of the two halves, with a main pool that runs music through the afternoon. For most people this is the smartest spend in Montego Bay.

Before you book

Adults only, but not couples only — friend groups and solo travellers are welcome. It gets busy in spring; the best pool areas need the Preferred Club upgrade.

$$$ Upper-midSee rates
Royalton Blue Waters Montego Bay, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort, Coral Spring, east of Montego Bay, Montego Bay All ages#3

Royalton Blue Waters

Coral Spring, east of Montego Bay35 min from MBJ

Best for: Families who still want a genuinely upscale resort

  • Marriott Autograph Collection — earns Bonvoy points
  • One of the best beaches on the north coast
  • Kids' club and family suites alongside adult areas

Most of Montego Bay's best all-inclusives are adults-only, which leaves families choosing between compromise and mediocrity. Royalton Blue Waters is the exception: a Marriott Autograph Collection resort on a wide, calm stretch of Coral Spring beach, with a kids' club, family suites and an adults-only Hideaway wing for anyone travelling without children.

Before you book

It is the furthest property on this list from the airport at around 35 minutes, and it is not walkable to anything. Budget for transfers or a car.

$$$$ LuxurySee rates
Sandals Montego Bay, Kent Avenue, Montego Bay Couples only#4

Sandals Montego Bay

Kent Avenue5 min from MBJ

Best for: The shortest transfer and the longest beach

  • The widest private white-sand beach of any Sandals in Jamaica
  • Over-the-water bar and oceanfront swim-up suites
  • Free shuttle and full privileges at Sandals Royal Caribbean

The resort that started the Sandals brand in 1981, and still the one with the most beach. You can be in the pool with a drink about fifteen minutes after clearing customs, and a free shuttle lets you use Sandals Royal Caribbean as well.

Before you book

It sits beside the runway, so there is aircraft noise during the day. Couples only.

$$$$ PremiumSee rates
S Hotel Montego Bay, Hip Strip, Montego Bay town, Montego Bay Boutique all-inclusive hotel#5

S Hotel Montego Bay

Hip Strip, Montego Bay town10 min from MBJ

Best for: Anyone who wants a hotel, not a mega-resort

  • Small, design-led hotel rather than a 500-room resort
  • In town on the Hip Strip, walkable to bars and Doctor's Cave Beach
  • Rooftop pool and lounge

Every other property on this list is a large resort in a compound. S Hotel is the alternative: a compact, design-forward all-inclusive right in town, where you can walk out of the lobby and be among Jamaican bars and restaurants in two minutes. It suits people who find the big resorts isolating.

Before you book

Town-centre location means street noise and a smaller beach scene than the resort strip. Confirm the age policy and exactly which meals and drinks the all-inclusive rate covers, as boutique inclusives vary more than the big chains.

$$$ Upper-midSee rates
Secrets St. James Montego Bay, Freeport Peninsula, Montego Bay Adults only#6

Secrets St. James

Freeport Peninsula15 min from MBJ

Best for: Adults who want quiet with livelier options next door

  • The calmer half of the Secrets peninsula
  • Full access to Secrets Wild Orchid next door
  • Colonial-style buildings and mature gardens

Same peninsula, same price bracket, and the same two-resorts-for-one arrangement as Wild Orchid — but with quieter pools and a more grown-up feel. Book this side if you want to read by the pool, and walk next door when you want music.

Before you book

Rooms are a little older than Wild Orchid's. The beach narrows at high tide.

$$$ Upper-midSee rates
Riu Palace Jamaica, Mahoe Bay, Montego Bay Adults only#7

Riu Palace Jamaica

Mahoe Bay12 min from MBJ

Best for: Riu's top tier without the top-tier price

  • 24-hour all-inclusive, including in-room liquor dispensers
  • Infinity pool and swim-up bar on Mahoe Bay
  • Exchange privileges with two neighbouring Riu resorts

The flagship of the three Riu hotels on Mahoe Bay. You get Riu's famously generous inclusions — food and drink around the clock — plus the run of the two sister properties a short walk away, for meaningfully less than the Sandals and Secrets rates.

Before you book

Dining leans buffet-heavy compared with Secrets or Sandals, and weekends can get rowdy. The beach is shared with the sister resorts.

$$$ MidSee rates
Breathless Montego Bay, Freeport Peninsula, Montego Bay Adults only#8

Breathless Montego Bay

Freeport Peninsula15 min from MBJ

Best for: Friend groups, bachelorettes and nightlife

  • Rooftop infinity pool and bar with 360° views
  • Daily pool parties and resident DJs
  • Modern tower rooms on the peninsula tip

The loudest property on this list, deliberately. Rooftop pool, foam parties, themed nights and a crowd that came to be sociable. If you are planning a group trip and the phrase "quiet retreat" makes you wince, this is your resort.

Before you book

The beach is small and man-made. Music carries to the rooms, so it is a poor choice for light sleepers or anyone wanting calm.

$$$ MidSee rates
Riu Montego Bay, Mahoe Bay, Montego Bay Adults only#9

Riu Montego Bay

Mahoe Bay12 min from MBJ

Best for: A big beach and a big buffet at a fair price

  • Long stretch of Mahoe Bay beach
  • 24-hour all-inclusive in the Riu style
  • Shares facilities with Riu Palace and Riu Reggae

The middle of the three Riu properties on Mahoe Bay: more space and a longer beach than Riu Reggae, less polish than Riu Palace, and access to both. A dependable, unfussy choice if the beach and the bar matter more to you than the thread count.

Before you book

Trip.com currently lists this as adults-only; Riu has changed the age policy on this property before, so confirm it on the listing before booking. Buffet-led dining.

$$$ MidSee rates
Riu Reggae, Mahoe Bay, Montego Bay Adults only#10

Riu Reggae

Mahoe Bay12 min from MBJ

Best for: The cheapest adults-only all-inclusive here

  • Lowest nightly rate of any adults-only resort on this list
  • Beachfront with swim-up bar
  • Use of Riu Montego Bay and Riu Palace facilities

Proof that you do not need a four-figure nightly rate for an adults-only all-inclusive in Montego Bay. Rooms are bright and modern, the pool scene is cheerful, and sharing Mahoe Bay with two sister Riu hotels means three resorts' worth of restaurants and bars.

Before you book

Busy and buffet-focused, with fewer à-la-carte options than the pricier resorts. The beach gets crowded at peak times.

$$ ValueSee rates
Grand Decameron Cornwall Beach, A Trademark All-Inclusive Resort, Cornwall Beach, Montego Bay town, Montego Bay All ages#11

Grand Decameron Cornwall Beach

Cornwall Beach, Montego Bay town10 min from MBJ

Best for: Value in town, within walking distance of things

  • Directly on Cornwall Beach in town
  • Walking distance to the Hip Strip and Doctor's Cave
  • Family-friendly with a low nightly rate

One of the few all-inclusives in Montego Bay where you can leave the property on foot and actually get somewhere. Cornwall Beach puts you next to Doctor's Cave and a short walk from the Hip Strip's bars and restaurants, at a price well below the resort-strip properties.

Before you book

A town resort, so expect street noise and a smaller footprint than the Mahoe Bay or Freeport properties. Inclusions are more basic than at Secrets or Sandals — check what's covered.

$$ ValueSee rates
Deja Resort, Montego Bay, Montego Bay All ages#12

Deja Resort

Montego Bay15 min from MBJ

Best for: The lowest entry price on this list

  • The cheapest all-inclusive rate of the twelve
  • Family-friendly and unpretentious
  • Leaves budget for excursions and eating out

The entry point. Deja is not competing with Sandals and it does not pretend to — it is a straightforward, affordable all-inclusive for travellers who plan to spend their days out at Dunn's River, the Luminous Lagoon and the Martha Brae rather than on a resort lounger.

Before you book

Set expectations to match the price: older rooms, simpler food and fewer facilities than everything above it. Read recent guest reviews on Trip.com before committing.

How to pick, in about a minute

Montego Bay has more all-inclusive resorts per mile of coast than almost anywhere in the Caribbean, and they are far less interchangeable than the brochures suggest. Three questions settle it.

1. Who is coming?

This is the question that eliminates the most options fastest. Sandals is couples-only — two adults sharing a room, so no friends, no solo travellers, no children. Secrets, Breathless and the Riu properties are adults-only at 18+, which still welcomes friend groups and solo travellers. Royalton Blue Waters, Grand Decameron and Deja take all ages. Booking a couples-only resort for a group trip is the single most common and most expensive mistake here.

2. What do you want the days to feel like?

Quiet: Secrets St. James, Royalton Blue Waters. Sociable but civilised: Secrets Wild Orchid, Riu Palace. Actively loud, with pool parties and DJs: Breathless, Riu Reggae. Romantic and low-key: the two Sandals. Out among locals rather than behind a gate: S Hotel or Grand Decameron, both in town.

3. Where should you be?

Kent Avenue is minutes from the airport, with runway noise as the trade-off. Mahoe Bay, ten to twelve minutes east, holds Sandals Royal Caribbean and all three Riu hotels on one long beach. The Freeport peninsula, about fifteen minutes out, juts into the Marine Park and holds Secrets and Breathless. Montego Bay town puts S Hotel and Grand Decameron within walking distance of the Hip Strip. Coral Spring, thirty-five minutes east, is quieter with the best beach and Royalton Blue Waters.

What "all-inclusive" covers here

At all twelve: every meal, snacks, alcoholic and soft drinks, non-motorised water sports, nightly entertainment, Wi-Fi and use of the gym. Extra almost everywhere: spa treatments, motorised water sports, scuba beyond an intro dive, top-shelf spirits and off-site excursions.

The real difference is dining style. Sandals and Secrets include unlimited à-la-carte restaurants with no reservations required. Riu runs large buffets with a few reservable themed restaurants, plus 24-hour service and in-room liquor dispensers. Grand Decameron and Deja are more basic again — perfectly fine, but check what is covered before you assume.

On tipping: Sandals, Secrets and Breathless operate no-tipping policies for staff, butlers and spa therapists excepted. At Riu, Royalton, Decameron and Deja small tips are appreciated but never required. Tip your transfer driver and tour guides everywhere.

When to go

December to April is dry, hot and expensive, with US spring break in March making the lively resorts noticeably rowdier. May, June and November are the value sweet spot — still mostly dry, far cheaper, and quieter. Late August to October is the cheapest window of the year and sits in hurricane season, which is a reasonable gamble if you book a free-cancellation rate and buy travel insurance. Reggae Sumfest in mid-July fills the city and pushes prices up for that week.

Booking notes

  • Prices on Trip.com move daily. The rate you see today is not the rate next week, in either direction.
  • Choose a free-cancellation rate if there is any chance your dates shift — it usually costs little or nothing extra.
  • Sandals includes round-trip airport transfers; the others generally sell them as an add-on. Arrange them before you fly.
  • Fill in the Jamaica immigration form online before departure.
  • Mention honeymoons, birthdays or anniversaries when booking — most of these resorts add something.

Prefer a whole house?

Once your group is past about eight people, a staffed private villa usually costs less per person than the equivalent resort rooms, and gives you a kitchen and a pool nobody else uses. We compare nine Montego Bay villas separately. If you specifically want adults-only, we also have a dedicated adults-only ranking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best all-inclusive resort in Montego Bay?

It depends who you are travelling with, which is why this list is not a single winner. For couples, Sandals Royal Caribbean is the standout thanks to its private island and overwater bungalows. For best value, Secrets Wild Orchid gives you two resorts for one rate. For families, Royalton Blue Waters is the only genuinely upscale all-ages option. For the lowest price, Riu Reggae among adults-only resorts and Deja Resort overall.

Are all-inclusive resorts in Montego Bay worth it?

For most visitors, yes. Food and drink in Jamaica are not cheap once you add up three meals, drinks and transport every day, and Montego Bay resorts are clustered along stretches of coast where walking out to restaurants is not always practical. The exception is if you plan to be out on excursions most days, in which case a cheaper property like Deja or Grand Decameron leaves budget for the trips.

Which Montego Bay resorts are adults only?

Secrets Wild Orchid, Secrets St. James, Breathless, Riu Palace Jamaica, Riu Reggae and Riu Montego Bay are adults-only (18+). The two Sandals resorts go further and are couples-only, meaning two adults sharing. Royalton Blue Waters, Grand Decameron Cornwall Beach and Deja Resort welcome all ages.

How far are the resorts from Montego Bay airport?

Closer than almost anywhere in the Caribbean. Sandals Montego Bay is about five minutes away, the Mahoe Bay resorts ten to twelve, the Freeport peninsula resorts fifteen, and Royalton Blue Waters around thirty-five minutes east at Coral Spring.

What is actually included?

At every resort here: all meals, snacks, alcoholic and soft drinks, non-motorised water sports and nightly entertainment. Spa treatments, motorised water sports, off-site excursions and some premium spirits cost extra. Sandals and Secrets include unlimited à-la-carte dining with no reservations; Riu, Decameron and Deja lean more on buffets. Tipping is not expected at Sandals, Secrets or Breathless.

When is the cheapest time to go?

Late August to early December is low season with the lowest rates, though it overlaps hurricane season. Mid-January to April is the dry, expensive peak. May, June and November tend to give the best balance of weather and price. Choosing a free-cancellation rate on Trip.com is worth it whenever your dates might move.

Resort or private villa?

Resorts win for couples and small groups who want everything handled for one price. Once you are eight or more people, a staffed private villa often costs less per person and gives you a kitchen and your own pool. We compare nine Montego Bay villas separately.
